Bible Commentary

1 John 5:13 is a Bible verse where the disciple John is sharing on God’s promise of eternal life for those who believe in His Son Jesus Christ.

As Christians we often struggle with our salvation. Sometimes, we have doubts, asking, “Am I truly saved? Or Can I lose my salvation?”

To answer these questions, we simply have to look at what the Word of God says, and then ask yourself a few simple questions.

First what does the Word of God say?

If you (and YES that means YOU…no one is excluded) believe in the name of Jesus (the Son of God), YOU will know that you have eternal life, just as 1 John 5:13 says.

John is basically saying salvation is a gift of God, sent to you in the form of His Son Jesus, and because it is a gift all you have to do is receive it in faith–believing. It’s that simple!

John goes on to tell us how long this gift of salvation will last. He says that you may KNOW that YOU have ETERNAL LIFE. If you look up the word eternal in the dictionary, it will give you this definition: Lasting or existing forever; without end or beginning.

Unlocking the Truth – Salvation

Now the questions.

Am I truly Saved?

To answer that question, you have to ask yourself an additional question:

Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and was sent to die for YOUR sins, was crucified on the Cross and that God raised him from the dead?

If you can answer that question with a Yes, then it’s that simple. You have received the gift of salvation in faith, and YOU are saved, just as 1 John 5:13 says.

Can I lose my salvation?

NO! It’s ETERNAL – Lasting or existing forever; without end or beginning.

John 5:24 says “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

Rest in the promises of God. If you start having doubts about your salvation, your worthiness, or God’s plan for you…any questions at all, go to the Word of God and read it, the answers are all there. Then pray and meditate on the Word, asking God to reveal the Truth to you.

Lastly, if you couldn’t answer yes to the question: Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God and was sent to die for MY sins, was crucified on the Cross and that God raised him from the dead?

I strongly urge you to find a Pastor or a strong Christian believer in your area and ask them for help in believing in the promise of salvation through Jesus Christ.
