Now godliness with contentment is great gain.

Bible Commentary

1 Timothy 6:6 is a Bible Verse where Paul makes a profound statement about the importance of contentment.

I used to cringe when I heard a sermon or Bible passage about the importance of being content, because I interpreted that to mean I wasn’t going to get the thing I was hoping for.

My perception about “being content” was a negative one, because I felt denied…and disappointed. However, that’s not what contentment is all about. The actual definition is: to appease the desires of.

If our desires are appeased, it means they are satisfied, not denied.

We’re not necessarily content only after we attain the object of our affection. We can be content in our attitude WITHOUT the thing we desire. How?

To Be Content

In my experience, I’ve learned that contentment comes in two different ways:

1)   With a decision of the will, which comes by a grateful heart for all we already have, or

2)   A loss of something we had that we didn’t fully appreciate before, which can transform an ungrateful heart to a more sensitive and thankful one.

Personally, I believe that #1 above is Godliness with contentment, as Paul stated in 1 Timothy 6:6.

We come to a point in our walk with Christ where we learn that thankfulness is the key to happiness. That’s where the “gain” comes in.

The way to appease the cravings of our desires is to take our eyes off of what we want and onto what we already have, and then be grateful for it, really grateful. When we do that, we make way for a peaceful contentment, where before there was a loud sound of a clanging cymbal (1 Corinthians 13:1).

That peaceful contentment is a beautiful harmony that is pleasing to our ears and our mind, and it flows over into other areas of our lives. It is the peace of Christ which allows for more room for Him to move into our hearts and thoughts. When we have more of Him, we need less of the world.

He is our gain.

He is our contentment.

He is our peace.

Study the Bible verse of 1 Timothy 6:6 to experience the peaceful joy and contentment of Jesus Christ in your heart, mind and soul.
