Bible Commentary

2 Timothy 1:6 is a Bible verse in the New Testament where Paul is instructing Timothy, his son in the faith, to stir up the gift of God within him.

If you are a believer of Jesus Christ, you have within you some kind of spiritual gift(s). (See a list of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12.) Most likely, your spiritual gifts are the strengths you have. It is what makes you feel fulfilled and rewarded, even powerful and confident.

You might already know what they are if you have served in some kind of ministry, or you may have used them in a secular environment, perhaps on the job or in the home, or as a student.

However, maybe you have only had a taste of the fulfillment which comes from using your spiritual gifting or calling, and you are no longer in an environment which allows you to operate in those gifts.

Take heart, for God has a time and place in mind—a plan—for you to use your spiritual gifts for Him and His Kingdom here on earth. Look at what Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God…”

What reason is Paul referring to? In the prior verse, 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul speaks of Timothy’s sincere faith, which dwelled in him because it first dwelled in his grandmother and mother.

Unlocking the Truth – Spiritual Gifts

Our daily work can seem empty and without purpose if we are not walking in faith, believing that God has a purpose, a reason for it. Paul remembered Timothy’s faith and encouraged him to use the gifts of his calling, even in the face of false teaching amidst the worldly lusts and evil of his day.

It is the same for you and me. We must stir up, or fan the flame of the excitement and enthusiasm we once had when we walked in our spiritual gifts. There is no greater time than now.

The fire will come back upon your recognition and remembrance of your gifts. Maybe there is a video or photograph that will help you remember, or a person you can speak to, that will help re-ignite your passion and calling.

Pray for guidance and an opportunity to be used for the glory of God in His Kingdom here on earth. He will light the way for you.

There is a great purpose for your life. Believe and remember your spiritual gifts. As you pursue Christ in prayer, believing He has a rich purpose for your life, the Light of life will emerge and show you the way (John 8:12).

Study the Bible verse of 2 Timothy 1:6 and remember your spiritual gifts to re-ignite your excitement, or fan the flame of your passion and calling in Christ.
