Verse Of The Day

Deuteronomy 30:5 (NKJV)

Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land
which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it.
He will prosper you and multiply you
more than your fathers.

Song Of The Day

Bible Commentary

Deuteronomy 30:5 is a Bible verse from the Old Testament where God promises to prosper and multiply those who return to Him.

What does it mean to you to be prospered and multiplied? Do you think of financial prosperity, or prosperity in your health or relationships? If God is multiplying us, it would mean all of those things, wouldn’t it?

The promise in Deuteronomy 30:5 starts off with, “Then…” Let’s see what must happen before the promise takes place.

Deuteronomy 30:1-3
Now it shall come to pass, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives you, and you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you.

Whether we realize it or not, the church of God is in captivity, but not in the traditional sense we might picture, as in wartime. Most of us are not physically imprisoned, but all of us at some point have been spiritually imprisoned.

We have known and felt the spiritual oppression of the devil’s authority and power upon the earth. We have felt the sting of God’s curse from the time of Adam and Eve.

The oppression (captivity) comes from various sources. It could be a governmental oppression, an oppression in the workplace or even in the circle of our own family. It could be glaringly obvious or quietly subtle. Either way, any form of oppression is captivity, and is a just punishment for following after something besides God.

Deuteronomy30-5

God said in Deuteronomy 30:2 above that if we return to the Lord with all our heart and soul, us and our children, then He would bring us back from captivity and have compassion on us, which brings us to the Verse of the Day:

Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. Deuteronomy 30:5

The word “possess” in Hebrew means: to occupy (by driving out previous tenants); to seize, to inherit and to expel.
