Bible Commentary

Isaiah 53:5b is the powerful end of a famous Bible Verse that explains the miracle of healing.

Have you ever called on God to heal something in your body that was really annoying you? You left the prayer in His hands and went on your way. Then sometime later, you realize the thing that was annoying you was gone, and you didn’t even realize when it left you?

Jesus is still in the healing business, and sometimes we don’t even know it.

Have you ever stopped to consider the wonder of the human body? How it has automatic healing properties, like a flesh wound or even the common cold? There are so many conditions our bodies recover from on their own. God built that in to us.

We don’t recognize these things as miracles because they are an every-day occurrence, but they are precisely that. God created our bodies with great precision and care. He is a Master Creator. Jesus said in Matthew 10:30 that the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Isn’t that fascinating?! God cares so much about every little detail of our bodies that even our hairs are numbered! And not only our bodies, but our entire lives—everything that is important to us. He holds every detail of our lives in His hands. What may be a distant memory in our mind is crystal clear to our Father. Something dear that we think is gone and forgotten is not forgotten by God the Father.

Matthew 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

The “Why?” Question

Okay, so now the big question. If God loves us so much and created us with such care, why hasn’t He healed me from this, or my sister from that, or my child, etc.?

Our ways are not God’s ways and our thoughts are not God’s thoughts (Isaiah 55:8). He operates on a much higher level than we can possibly imagine, and we must sometimes simply accept the fact that He alone is God. However, if we’re hungry for the knowledge of God, He made it easy…the Bible and prayer. If it is specific answers we want, we can pursue the truth in Christ for those answers. He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6).

Maybe He is waiting for us to pursue Him. Maybe He is calling us to grow our faith in Christ. Maybe He is using our sickness as a faith opportunity, a way to reveal His glory and great love for us.

Jesus said in John 11:4, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

Do you remember when the disciples were in the boat on the sea late at night, and they saw Jesus walking on the water toward them? They were petrified! They thought it was a spirit. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. (Matthew 14:27)

They were in an unsettling atmosphere—in a boat on the sea, late at night. It was dark all around. They could not see Jesus. They only had each other.
