Jeremiah 31:28 (NKJV)

And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord.

Bible Commentary

Jeremiah 31:28 is a Bible verse in the Old Testament where God reveals His promise to restore the prosperity of Israel.

The first part of this Bible verse is somewhat disturbing, to know that God in His anger ordered the destruction and affliction of His people. We don’t fully comprehend the severity of the consequences of sin.

We were born into a world where we live in the effects of the curse every day, so we don’t know what it’s like to live in a place where there is no sin and no curse. In our simple understanding, the only place like that is Heaven.

As grim as God’s anger and punishment are, His mercy and loving kindness are far greater. Jesus Christ on the cross is proof of this. James 2:13 tells us that mercy triumphs over judgment.

For this reason, we have hope. Without the mercy of God, we would have no hope at all.

Unlocking the Truth – He Comes Quickly

As difficult as the trials and sufferings are in our afflictions, Christ promises His Presence in the midst of them, and then on the other side are the mercies of God, which are far greater.

Jeremiah 31:28 “And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord.”

The word “build” in Hebrew means: build, obtain children, make, repair, set up. The Hebrew meanings of “plant” are: to strike in, fix, fastened.

These words allude to the restoration of something that has been before. Israel is referred to as God’s chosen people, and we, the church are the tabernacle of God, where His Presence dwells.

Acts 15:16 says, “After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up;”

Building Up the Church

The church has been in a state of ruin for some time now. We are scorned and condemned by nations and unbelievers. We are in dire need of rebuilding and restoration, and that is just what God is promising in Jeremiah 31:28.

“…I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord.”

The most exciting part about this promise are the words, “watch over,” which in Hebrew means: to be alert, sleepless, hasten.

God promises to hasten this promise. He will not sleep until it is accomplished. He works day and night, restoring, rebuilding and planting.

Much preparation is required for a task so gigantic, and the prayers of the saints help speed things along. Our constant prayers, reminding God of His promises, stir up His zeal and desire for His bride. He comes quickly.

Study the Bible verse of Jeremiah 31:28 and watch for the restoration of the tabernacle of God within you.
