John 16:33 (NASB)

These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.

Song Of The Day

Bible Commentary

John 16:33 is a popular Bible verse where Jesus tells us the truth about the difficulties of life, but gives us hope in Him. Have you ever prayed really hard, asking God to remove the challenges that are facing you, only to find silence?

In John 16:33, Jesus tells us that in this life we will face tribulations. He didn’t say that He would remove all challenges we face in life. He said to have peace when going through them and that ultimately, we will have victory through Him.

The challenges we face can be a very dark and lonely time in our life. That is when we must rely on our faith in God’s love and His promises, and not give in to depression and defeat.

Psalm 23:4 says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.”

God knows the difficulties we face. What could be more fearful than walking through the valley of the shadow of death? But the Psalmist goes on to say “Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.”

Our Lord tells us that during these times of sorrow and desolation He knows exactly where we are and not only that, but He is there with us and He comforts us.

Just over a year ago I found out I have several nodules on my thyroid. Further tests revealed that they were noncancerous, but there were still some very unnerving side effects. The nodules can cause hyperthyroidism that sets off a feeling of extreme panic, and that is exactly what happened to me.

The day before I was scheduled to preach at a church of a good Pastor friend, I started having severe panic attacks and could not get any relief from them. I would pray and ask God to remove it from me, but it only seemed to get worse. Nothing I did seemed to help. It was though I was truly walking through the valley of death.

So, for that entire day and into the night and even the following morning I walked throughout our home, praying and quoting scripture. Walking seemed to be the only thing that would help ease the feeling of dread and despair. Anytime I would try to sit or lay down the feeling of panic would take over and I would have to get back up and start walking.

Satan was definitely raging war in my mind, my soul and spirit. I knew he did not want me to preach that day and was doing all he could to keep me from it. Through God’s grace I was able to preach and it was a great time and God blessed throughout the service.

Although I still have bouts of anxiety, God has made a way for me to overcome those feelings and to be able to have peace during those times. I found this poem by Edgar A. Guest entitled, “Don’t You Quit.” It was written in 1921, but is a good reminder to us all today that no matter the challenges, we must not quit.

Don't You Quit

When Things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and debts are high,
And you want to Smile but have to sigh.
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won if he'd stuck it out,
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up,
When he might captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown,

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit.

Why we have to go through certain struggles in our life, I truly do not know. What I do know is that no matter how scary or sorrowful it is, God has a plan, He is victorious and will make a way for us to get through it.

If you are currently in the midst of the storm of your life, don’t quit, keep going and don’t forget God is right there with you!

Study the Bible verse of John 16:33, and remember no matter what you’re going through, you can have peace in Jesus Christ because He overcame the world.
