Joshua 6:20 (NKJV)

So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

Bible Commentary

Joshua 6:20 is a Bible verse from the famous story of the Walls of Jericho in the Old Testament. Jericho was one of the many cities the Israelites had to conquer in order to take possession of the land the Lord had promised them.

It’s a bit unsettling isn’t it? The city of Jericho was well-established and heavily inhabited. The people were going about their daily business, but suddenly it was given over to the Israelites by God.

Father God is very serious when He says to follow His commands and obey Him. Our obedience is not just for our protection and blessing, but it is also for the honor of His Name.

When we obey Him, we show Him respect and reverence. He is a holy God. When we disobey or disregard Him, we are disrespecting His statutes, His gifts to us, and His sacrifice for us. And we dishonor His Name.

God’s love for us is so deep and so intense that we cannot possibly fathom how much it pains His heart to be ignored and rejected, particularly because of the great sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ.

God said in Deuteronomy 7:16, “Also you shall destroy all the peoples whom the Lord your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.”

There is a time for compassion and mercy, and there is a time for war. God is slow to anger and His love knows no bounds. However, when His wrath is unleashed, it can be a terrible time of doom and destruction. He only restrains the pain and wrath of the rejection of His Son, Jesus Christ, for so long.

Jericho was one such city. They had rejected God and the people of God who represented His Name.

Unlocking the Truth – His Great Name

God told Joshua that He had given Jericho, its king and its mighty men of valor into the hand of Israel (Joshua 6:2). He instructed him to march before the ark of the Lord around the city one time for six days, and then on the seventh day they were to march around the city seven times.

And when the priests blew the trumpets, all the people were to shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city would fall down flat. Then the people could invade the city and take it.

In Joshua 6:20, that’s just how it happened:

So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

If the Lord is on our side, no one can come against us. If the Lord is not on our side, no people, king or nation can defend us. It’s that simple. That’s why it’s so important to accept the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, as our Savior.

Joshua 6:19 says, “all the silver, and gold and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.” And in Joshua 6:24, “only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.”

Your Assignment

Their instructions were to go in and recover what was the Lord’s, to take it back and put it where it belongs–in the house of the Lord. What an amazing assignment!

There is a mighty spiritual battle of Jericho at work even now. Prayerfully consider your assignment in it. What is it the Lord wants you to go in and possess–something that is consecrated unto the Lord–so you can give it back to Him where it belongs–honor, fame, something else or someone? Whatever it is, or whoever it is, they belong to Him.

His great Name will prevail, and those who represent Him will prevail with Him. For those of us covered under the blood of Jesus, there could be no greater honor than to be clothed with the glory of His Name.

Let’s make absolutely sure we’re on His side, representing His Name. We must remember: it’s not about us. It’s all about Him. Glory to God! Study the Bible verse of Joshua 6:20 and recover the glory, honor and righteousness of God Almighty! He reigns!
