Bible Commentary

Psalm 23:5 is a Bible verse from the most popular Psalm in the Bible which describes the victory and abundance we have in Jesus Christ.

Have you been waiting for a victory in your life? Not just a little victory, but a BIG victory? Maybe there is a chronic condition in our finances we can’t seem to shake, or our relationships always seem to hit a brick wall, or we suffer from some physical ailment that keeps rearing its ugly head.

The first part of Psalm 23:5 is the answer, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” When Jesus Christ conquered the devil, He made an open show of His victory. Because we have accepted Christ, we also are victorious over our enemy, the devil.

Colossians 2:12

buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

Colossians 2:15

Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Our victory is in Jesus Christ, and we must stand firm in that truth to receive its fullness.

Your Crowning Achievement

The next part of Psalm 23:5, “You anoint my head with oil” is like a crowning achievement for accepting victory in Jesus Christ.

The word “anoint” has two very distinct meanings: 1) take away the ashes 2) abundance.

Before we can fully enjoy the abundance of what we have in Jesus Christ, He must first remove the ashes of brokenness from our past, from our hang-ups and our sin.

As we walk with Him, He removes the ashes so we can welcome healing peace and freedom from the weight of those burdens. Next, comes abundance.

Your Greatest Victory

After Jesus Christ descended into the lower parts of the earth and defeated the devil (Ephesians 4:9), He was exalted into Heaven to sit at God’s right hand to receive what the Father promised Him, which He freely pours out on us.

Acts 2:33

Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Everything we could ever want or need is in the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us. Christ’s mindset, intellect, wisdom, love, peace and joy—it’s all in Him, and we have it living inside of us!

The Crowning Touch

The last part of Psalm 23:5, “My cup runs over” is the crowning touch and a wonderful visual. Just like a cup overflowing with your favorite coffee, picture your soul overflowing with the beautiful radiant brightness of His coming.

Remember:

  • Stand firm.
  • Let Him take away the ashes.
  • Enter into the joy of your Lord.

Study the Bible verse of Psalm 23:5, and prepare for the greatest victory of your life.
