Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.

Verse of the Day

Bible Commentary

Psalm 91:14 is a Bible verse in the Book of Psalms where God is declaring rescue and deliverance to His bride who loves Him.

We, as the body of Christ, sometimes forget that we are in a marriage relationship with God. We are the bride of Christ. Ephesians 5:23 states that “the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church…”

We can think of God as a groom who is passionate for his bride. He pours out His love with a fervent desire to shelter us with His strength and shower us with His provision. He has proven His sacrificial love toward us by the cross, and in response He wants and expects faithful devotion from His bride.

However, over the centuries, there have been some very rocky times in this marriage. We have been an unfaithful bride, turning our back on God and pursuing other suitors—false gods, all of which are empty and vain.

Though we have been adulterous at times, Jesus Christ holds out His hand of mercy to us, evident from the cross.

Let’s look at the first part of Psalm 91:14, “Because he loved Me.” In Hebrew, “love” means: to cling, join, to love, delight in, desire. As Deuteronomy 6:5 states, we are to love God with all our hearts, minds and souls.

Safety and Security in a Name

Though we might not feel the emotion of love toward God at first, we can make a conscious decision to pursue Him and His Word until we develop a relationship with Him, so we can know Him intimately and love Him faithfully.

To know God is to love Him.

Those of us who have accepted God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ can be restored back to a harmonious marriage relationship with Him. God speaks to those who have loved Him in Psalm 91:14, and He declares deliverance over us. “Deliver” in Hebrew means: slip out, escape, carry away safe.

Whatever in this life that has you bound, you can be delivered.

Not only does God declare our deliverance, but He promises to set us securely on high. In Hebrew, “high” means: lofty, inaccessible, safe, strong, defend, exalt, be excellent, set up.

Christ The Rock

In the book of Song of Solomon, God’s marriage example and love letter to His bride, note this very interesting verse where the groom is addressing his bride, “O my dove, in the clefts of the rock…”

Our soul can enjoy peace and safety, hidden securely from the chaos of the world in the clefts of the rock—Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the promise of deliverance and safety God promised us. Just as a groom gives his new bride his name, so Jesus has given His bride His Name as a secure covering, or hiding place.

Acts 4:12 says, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

By accepting the Name of Jesus Christ, we are saved, delivered and set on high in the clefts of the rock, for He is the Rock. We are His bride and He is our groom—our Savior, Protector and Provider.

May our marriage to Him be resilient as it shines for the world to see, so that others may be drawn to the safety and security of Holy Matrimony in Jesus Christ.
