Bible Commentary

Revelation 21:2 is a Bible verse in the last Book of the Bible where John is describing his vision given to him by the Holy Spirit of the entrance of Heaven upon earth, the new Jerusalem.

We sometimes think of the second coming of Christ as a sudden event, which takes place in an instant, when the trumpet sounds. And there will come a time when He will be revealed as quickly as a twinkling of an eye.

However, before that magic moment occurs there is much preparation that takes place, which is like honey being poured out upon the lives of His people. The anointing of God is very thick, and like honey it takes time to coat the surface.

The Holy Spirit is busy at work undoing what has been done. He is removing the ashes, as we discussed in Psalm 23:5, so the healing ointment of God can cover a clean surface.

Just like the undercurrent in the ocean, we may not see the undercurrent itself, but we see and feel the effects of it. And so it is with the Holy Spirit’s work in these last days.

Just like the time when the heavens were torn open and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus (Mark 1:10), there are many layers of spiritual darkness that must be penetrated and cleared out before we can be settled in the new Jerusalem (or it can be settled upon us).

The Holy City

Revelation 21:2 says, “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.”

The word “adorned” in the Greek means: to put in proper order, decorate; specifically, to snuff (a wick); garnish, trim.

If the bride of Christ is to be put in proper order, that would indicate a current disorder, since the fall of man when the curse went into effect and the devil became the prince of the earth (Ephesians 2:2).

Jesus told us in John 12:31 that it was time for the prince of this world to be cast out, and that He had come to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8).

That is precisely what He did when He took the penalty for our sin and descended into the lower parts of the earth (Ephesians 4:9) and made an open show of His victory over the dominion of the devil (Colossians 2:15).

Since Christ prepared a place for us, He made a way for us to follow Him to that same victory in the heavens so that He and His bride can be together again (John 14:3). As He draws the heavens to us (new Jerusalem), He draws those who know His Name closer to the heavens.

Hebrews 12:26 says, “And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” When it seems like the earth is moving beneath your feet, stand firm. Press into Him and hold onto the Rock. He is our fortress and shield.

Unlocking the Truth – A Bride Adorned

Jesus said in Luke 9:27, “But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus speaks about those who fear Him. For them, the kingdom of God is the new Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven, just as Revelation 21:2 says. John was describing the adornment, or proper order, for the bride of Christ.

Just like a bride who adorns herself in a beautiful wedding gown coming down the aisle toward her groom, the bride of Christ is being so adorned as her Groom approaches.

What an exciting time to be alive! As servants of Christ, we have abundant and grand promises coming our way. They are being stirred up in us and among us. God lives among His people once again. Blessed be the name of the Lord!
