Bible Commentary

Proverbs 31:25 is a popular Bible verse from the Old Testament that describes an important trait of a virtuous woman. Let’s dig right into the meat of this verse. Some Hebrew meanings of the word “strength” are: strong, force, security, majesty, praise and power.

Let’s face it. Life is tough–for women and men. Because it is tough, we need to be strong to face and overcome all the challenges and struggles that come our way, no matter what role we are in—wife, mother, caregiver, employee, daughter, sister. The list goes on.

We can’t overcome a challenge if we don’t first face it, and that means accept it. Sometimes it would be easier to just turn away and act as if it isn’t really there.

Remember that Jesus is somewhere in the adversity, and when we face the truth, we face Jesus. He is with us and will help us. Proverbs 31:25 says, “Strength and honour are her clothing…” When we brave the storm arm-in-arm with Jesus Christ, we grow stronger because He is the security and power in the very definition of “strength”.

We might not feel strong in the midst of it, but our prayers for strength and peace will be heard and answered. (Let’s not forget to pray.) We can get so accustomed to looking to another person, a good meal or a soft couch at home to offer us comfort that we forget to look to God, the Father of all.

Think about it this way. We don’t have to wait to be comforted. The Holy Spirit is within us, and accessible RIGHT NOW.

Breathe Him In

Let’s practice drawing our strength from Him first, like breathing in the aroma of fresh-cut flowers. Remember Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

God is preparing us for a great purpose, so we need great strength. Proverbs 24:10 says, “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” We mustn’t shrink back from our God-ordained purpose. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10).

The storms are easier when we know that we know that we know Jesus Christ is with us. He is our clothing of security and power—our armor. (Ephesians 6:13)
